Honda Marine has announced the launch of its new BF350 outboard, the first Honda V8 motor to be available commercially.

The new model is Honda‘s most technologically advanced outboard, integrating a host of innovative features which it says deliver ‘premium power’ as well as ‘unparalleled performance and operation’ for boaters.

Aimed at boats 25ft+ (for both pleasure and utility applications), Honda’s BF350 is said to offer a number of benefits, including a broader, flatter torque curve; smoother power delivery throughout the engine’s operating range; ergonomically designed controls; and improved fuel efficiency.

The new BF350 5-litre V8 outboard is designed to deliver 350hp at the propeller shaft while operating on 86-octane unleaded gasoline (vs. premium unleaded octane). With a rated high-power output of 350 hp at 5500 RPM, the outboard is said to combine high-propulsion operation with smooth response and exceptionally robust torque.

Adapted from Honda automotive platforms, VTEC (Variable Valve Timing & Lift Electronic Control) is an exclusive Honda technology incorporated into the design of the BF350 outboard, providing a broader, flatter torque curve and supporting the delivery of smooth power throughout the engine’s operating range.

The new four-stroke, single overhead camshaft engine also incorporates Honda’s Lean Burn Control technology, which automatically adjusts the air/fuel mixture according to speed and load while maximising power throughout the acceleration range. This combination of features is said to optimise fuel efficiency in cruise mode (2,000 to 4,500 RPM), while the Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) delivers precise amounts of fuel and air to each cylinder for quick starts, instant throttle response and low fuel consumption.

In addition, the Honda Intelligent Shift & Throttle (iST) command and control system provides control and plug-and-play installation of Honda Marine products and third-party controls and devices. Honda says its iST system enhances operability and performance, including effortless shift and throttle control, fine-tuning of throttle settings at any speed, and enhanced docking and slow-speed control.

The iST system on the Honda BF350 incorporates an ergonomic, top-mount controller with five buttons to control functions including trim support, automatic tilt, cruise control and trolling mode. This controller also integrates with a new HD-5 multi-function gauge with menu options (in English plus six other languages) that allows customers to monitor engine parameters; set and activate auto trim limits; customise and select trim support maps; monitor cruise control settings; and view enhanced engine fault notifications.

The Honda BF350 is available with an immobiliser ignition system that requires a remote transponder key to start the engine. The theft-deterrent immobiliser is designed to prevent the engine from being started without the owner’s smart key. If an attempt is made to start the engine without the smart key, the immobiliser disables the engine.

Models will be available in two colour options, Aquamarine Silver and Grand Prix White. Honda will announce availability, on-sale date and pricing for the BF350 outboard motor in early 2024.

The BF350 will be displayed at the International BoatBuilders Exhibition & Conference (IBEX, 3-5 October 2023) on the Honda Marine stand (3-925) in the Tampa Convention Center exhibit hall.
