METSTRADE: BlueNav debuts virtual anchor and hybrid navigation system
Marine hybrid technology firm BlueNav has announced the release of its latest navigation system, which includes a ‘virtual anchor’ feature alongside an updated hybrid software pack. The all-in-one-system will be available from January 2025 and incorporates advanced features such as an autopilot and speed regulator.
BlueNav, which is showcasing the technology this week at METSTRADE in Amsterdam, says its virtual anchor allows vessels to maintain their position automatically without deploying a physical anchor. This function relies on GPS and the NMEA2000 compass to adjust for environmental factors such as currents and wind. The firm says this system is designed to reduce damage to the seabed while providing precise position control.
The Hybrid Software Pack also includes a next-generation autopilot, enabling precise navigation along pre-programmed routes and reducing the need for manual helm adjustments. It is compatible with major chart plotter brands, including Garmin, Raymarine, Simrad, B&G, Lowrance and Furuno, and compensates for wind and current drift. The speed regulator complements the autopilot by managing course and waypoint tracking while optimising fuel and energy usage. This function is particularly effective for hybrid propulsion systems, supporting energy efficiency and reducing emissions.
The system integrates hybrid technology by combining electric motors with combustion engines. This approach lowers fuel consumption and emissions, offering a more environmentally conscious solution for boaters while maintaining performance.
