Portugal’s Marina de Portimão plans new superyacht berths
Marina de Portimão on the Portuguese coast has unveiled expansion plans which include new superyacht moorings.
Last week, the Secretary of State for Tourism, Pedro Machado, accompanied by André Gomes, president of Turismo do Algarve, and Álvaro Bila, Mayor of Portimão, alongside several other delegates unveiled plans for the ‘modernisation, safety, environmental and expansion of the Portimão Marina’.
The plans include new slips for superyachts and development to better protect the marina.
According to a commissioned study, many sail and power superyachts would be interested in stopping in Portimão, however, a lack of suitable slips means larger yachts instead head to other marinas in the Mediterranean with more capacity.
The proposed plans show Marina de Portimão with a new, fixed breakwater to its north side, designed to accommodate up to 18 yachts to 148ft (45 metres).
The marina will also construct another fixed breakwater to the south, extending from a jetty already there to home yachts up to 66ft (20 meters).
These new breakwaters will improve protection for vessels in both the north and south basins during storms.
The marina is awaiting the result of the decision on the application under preparation for funding from Portugal 2030 funds.
Marina de Portimão recently announced on Facebook a list of new equipment on site/coming soon including a new travel lift for 300T, new emergency turrets, new floats, new dual pump out for black warter and sewage and a new waste reception park.
The marina currently has 620 moorings and can accommodate yachts up to 164ft (50 meters). Since the waters are deep, too, visiting yachts can have drafts to 13 feet (4 meters). Even with this, however, local and national officials determined more business was better. In fact, last week Portugal’s Secretary of State revealed the news about the marina expansion, alongside the marina manager, the city’s mayor, and Algarve tourism and development officials.
