The Cruising Association (CA) has named Robin Baron as its 34th president, marking a significant leadership transition. The appointment was announced at the CA’s general meeting on 13 November.

Baron, who previously chaired the CA’s Regulatory & Technical Services (RATS) group, brings 48 years of association experience to the role. His sailing journey began at age 13, with a transformative cruising expedition with the London Sailing Project to Cherbourg aboard the 72′ ketch Rona at sixteen that he credits with igniting his lifelong passion for sailing.

“I regard this as a great honour and feel truly privileged to have this opportunity to head the CA as a leading organisation for cruising sailors. The CA is volunteer-led and, as such, is reliant on the talents and hard work of our volunteers. I have enormous respect for all they do,” says Baron.

Baron’s extensive sailing background includes cruising throughout European waters, from the Baltic to Biscay. He and his wife currently sail an X-Yacht XC38 in Cornwall. His volunteer service with the CA spans multiple roles, including Honorary Solicitor and Regional Editor for the Cruising Almanac.

The organisation has extended gratitude to the outgoing president Derek Lumb. This leadership transition for the Cruising Association also saw Nick Nottingham replacing Ivan Andrews, returning as vice president and chair of the council, and several new council appointments were made. The organisation, which counts HRH The Princess Royal and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston among supporters, serves over 6,400 members worldwide through various platforms.

The appointment of Baron signals the organisation’s commitment to strengthening its position as a leading voice in the cruising world while enhancing services for members and expanding its reach to new generations of sailors.

Baron concludes: “In some respects, the CA is a sleeping giant, unknown to many cruisers who would benefit from membership. I hope to raise the CA’s profile to match its undoubted capabilities.”
