Superyacht owners get new tool to track operational CO2 emissions
SEA Index (Superyacht Eco Association by Yacht Club de Monaco) and RINA say they have developed a new operational efficiency assessment method that evaluates the direct emissions of yachts over 25m and 400 gross tons, based on choice of fuel. This will aid with total life-cycle transparency.
Employing a well-to-wake methodology (looking at fuel’s emissions from its production until it is used), the method calculates emissions’ intensity throughout the entire life cycle, based on international standards approach. This holistic perspective allows stakeholders to make the right decisions and implement targeted strategies for reducing environmental footprints.
“Collaborating with RINA is enabling the Superyacht Eco Association to expand the scope of available tools for owners, captains and other stakeholders allowing them to assess impact depending on their choice of yacht fuel,” says SEA Index project manager, Natalie Quévert.
RINA became a corporate member of the Superyacht Eco Association (SEA Index) in 2023.
The newly unveiled fuel consumption method can also calculate the emissions in case biofuels are used, such as HVO (Hydro Treated Vegetable Oil), even if they are blended with conventional fuels.
It considers the same principles as the GHG (greenhouse gas) strategies adopted by the International Maritime Organisation and the European Union.
“We are very satisfied collaborating with Sea Index, and we appreciate their activities toward a greener yachting,” says one of RINA’s marine technical directors, Giuseppe Zagaria. “We have a very long history of cooperation with the whole yachting cluster in Monaco to which we would like to affirm the RINA experience for environmental protection. We compliment the commitment of Bernard D’Alessandri and Natalie Quevert expanding the Sea Index initiatives towards the yachting operational efficiency aspect, a key pillar of any decarbonisation strategy.”
“The well-to-wake approach ensures the method is future proof and we commend RINA and Giuseppe Zagaria for this valuable contribution to the SEA Index under the aegis of the ‘Monaco Capital of Advanced Yachting’ collective approach initiated by the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM),” concludes Quévert.
