Video: Fire at Croatian marina destroys 22 boats
A fire has torn through a marina in northwestern Croatia, destroying 22 boats and causing huge damage but no injuries.
An investigation is underway to determine what caused the fire at the marina in Medulin, a popular tourist town on the Adriatic.
Local media reports that some boat owners jumped into the sea to escape the fire, which broke out in the early hours of Wednesday (15 May 2024). Firefighters on the scene worked to separate the vessels that had not caught fire while battling the flames.
The fire was controlled later in the day, with authorities constructing an absorbent barrier in the sea to help mitigate environmental damage.
Speaking to AP, Dolores Brenko of the Medulin Marine Authority said the authority has also called for an ‘Eco Boat’ to help clean the detritus floating in the water.
Croatia’s coast has over 1,100 islands, and boating and marine tourism are both important industries in the country.
The country reported a jump in revenue from nautical tourism in 2023. The Adriatic coast saw a 12 per cent surge in marine tourism revenue in 2023, according to the country’s Bureau of Statistics (CBS).
The value of the sector totalled €161m. Berth rentals are the largest contributor to the growth.
