Virsec, the maritime security eLearning platform, has been granted approval by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its lithium-ion battery safety awareness course. 

This approval comes at a crucial time for the superyacht industry. Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly used in various onboard applications, from personal watercraft to communication devices. While the batteries offer increased efficiency, they also pose significant safety risks if not properly managed. In recent years, there has been a rise in battery-related fires on superyachts, highlighting the need for specialised and recognised safety training.

Virsec launched the fully online course, developed in collaboration with industry experts and Seascope France, at the start of this year. Now newly approved by ABS, it is specifically designed to meet the needs of the superyacht industry, including owners, managers, captains, and crew. 

The fully online course aims to provide comprehensive training on lithium-ion battery safety, adhering to industry standards and best practices. It is structured into eight short modules with content focussed on the electrochemistry and hazards of lithium-ion batteries, emphasising a preventative approach and highlighting the importance of proactive safety measures.

The training aligns with international regulations such as the International Safety Management Code and the Standards of Training, Certification, & Watchkeeping Convention, which mandates proper crew training in handling hazardous materials.

The UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency MGN 681 specifically emphasises the need for competent individuals to conduct charging operations involving lithium-ion batteries, further underlining the importance of this course.
